A Level Economics course overview

A Level Year 1

This year develops the foundations and skills that can be transferred to concepts studied later in the course.  Students are exposed to the fundamental ideas of markets, costs and benefits, externalities and aggregate demand.

A Level Year 1

This year there is 70% macroeconomics and 30% micro-economics: topics focus on trade, economic growth and government economic policy.

Economics A level and AS level covers the following five areas:

  • Basic economic ideas and resource allocation
  • The price system and the micro economy
  • Government microeconomic intervention
  • The macro economy
  • Government macro intervention

AS economics candidates answer multiple choice, data response and essay questions.

This format is repeated at economics A level where candidates will be tested on the additional syllabus content for A level, but they also require a knowledge and understanding of the AS level syllabus content.

Prior Learning

Candidates beginning this course are not expected to have studied economics previously. A qualification in maths equivalent to IGCSE would be useful.

Economics Enrichment at Phoenix Sixth Form

Throughout the course, students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with current economic issues by using robust economics websites like economicsonline and gov.uk as well as reading quality magazine publications such as The Economist.  After familiarising themselves with such current issues, these issues are debated from an economics perspective.  This knowledge and discussion will not only assist their exam performance but also help them to gain confidence and capabilities which they apply to university applications, their study and the workplace.

Applying for Exams

In the October of year 11, 12 and 13 parents and guardians will receive an email asking which exams the learner intends to take, and where they would like to take them. Parents and guardians must inform Phoenix if they need assistance finding an exam centre by mid-October.

Phoenix can support you in finding a local exam centre. It is then down to the individual to register with the centre of choice and pay the exam fees to the centre directly. As each exam centre sets their own fees we cannot provide accurate pricing.
