NOMINATED FOR THE 2019
Book Title: The New Caribbean Folktales & Legends for the 21st Century

Eagle Publications 2018
Genre: Folklore/Oral/Culture
ISBN:978-0-952325-3-5
Format: Paperback
Roselle Thompson’s The New Caribbean Folktales and Legends for the 21st Century (2018), seeks new methods of transmitting the tales, to ensure their longevity, for succeeding generations in the 21st century. Maintaining their didactic nature, Thompson has resurrected, and given life to the old Caribbean folktales, (with their significant wisdom, humour, colour, different language registers and thought-processes, transmission of caution, verbal defence and attempts to instil good sense), by infusing her tales with modern-day scenarios, designed to highlight the significance and existence of folk wisdom therein, that is relevant to the 21st century.
More specifically, The New Folktales and Legends for the 21st Century (2018), draws attention to the inter-generational strife between the older generation’s ways of thinking; the latter, whose memory and discourse is still linked to their past. This is squared against a point of convergence amongst the younger generations, who are more ready to dismiss the tales as being irrelevant to their present existence e.g. in relation to questions of identity, a sense of place, culture, their representation, and relevance to present lifestyles. In responding to this dilemma, Roselle attempts to bridge that gap by enabling a correlation and continuation between the old and new tales, for future generations.
This book is an innovative attempt to present Caribbean folktales, transmitted as folk wisdom for centuries, to the 21st century generations, as resurrected icons with linkages that continue to shape life in the present. The book suggests there is a possible need for intervention of folk wisdom, in finding present-day solutions, in ways that ensure the continuation of Caribbean folk wisdom.

EXTRACT
“….Despite living in the UK for over two decades, Desiree’s mother was still a firm believer in observing tradition, and felt that the little she could remember must be adhere to, for a trouble-free life.
“Child” she advised Desiree one day. “We have to think smart and remember that each foreigner in this place brings their own brand of customs from their own back-home, to carry on right here in England; with or without the English blessing!” Her voice was adamant, suggesting that it had to be done.
“It’s how the old people back-home lived and survived to this day,” she said, sighing with relief. Desiree had remained quietly listening, so her mother continued, “It have all types of Soucouyant right here in London; maybe not like the ones you hear about back home but believe me, they can take the shape of your best friend, your priest, even the person you share the pillow with!”( p.48/49)

PLAYS
GANG-GANG SARAH: A CARIBBEAN SENSATION

Eagle Publications 2020
Genre: Play/Culture/History
ISBN:978-1-8381068-3-6
Format: Paperback
This unique Caribbean Play presents an all-embracing Caribbean experience. Be prepared to be in awe by the famed folkloric icon Anancy, (who is presented as a female), together with other cultural cohorts; Papa Bois, the silk cotton tree, African gods, Kumina rituals, Kalinda dances, transplanting of African culture in the Caribbean, magical powers, plantation life, rebellion, and conquest.
Provocative in content and style, this play acquaints readers with a history of the making of the Caribbean, and Anancy in the Caribbean. A major theme highlighted is the politics of male dis-empowerment and the matrifocal family, as well as the role of transplantation, acculturation and synthesism of African cultures in the Caribbean. Ultimately, this play comes at an opportune moment, given present reflection in 2020, on the currency of re-assessing the values of past and present cultural assets in the 21st century, following George Floyd’s death in the USA, against actions that are directly linked to past atrocities, e.g., slavery, that continue to have repercussions in our world today. The writer suggests that Gang-Gang Sarah has been relegated to a myth, which debunked her legendary status and cultural importance, and instead branded her a witch. Therefore, a suggestion is that there should be a re-evaluation of the trope from “witch” to “warrior,” since perspectives on Gang-Gang’s African religious and cultural significance in the Caribbean environment, was based on misconceptions by the dominant Christian ideology, at that time.
Reviews:
“Thought-provoking! Perfect timing!” Peter Albright, Headteacher.
“It surprises and engages people to think or reconsider or engage intellectually or emotionally in a way that they might not have. Mervin Samuels
“This play is perfect literature for inclusion right across the school curriculum subjects.” Mr. B. Watson
“This play helps to clarify and represent the old and incomplete perspectives of Caribbean people, thus far.” Caribbean Voices
“Black Lives Matter protested, this play provides information and some clarity on the issues.” Claudia Matthews, Cultural Activist

THE PHANTOM OF THE GREAT HOUSE

Eagle Publications 2021
Genre: Play- Gothic/Thriller
ISBN:978-1-8381068-4-3
Format: Paperback
The Phantom of the Great House is a Caribbean Gothic play, set in Grenada, with a sub-genre categorised as a psychological thriller. Based on the iconic Great House in the Caribbean, the story combines elements of horror, romance, mystery, seduction, murder, suspense, debauchery, lust, obeah, brutality, zombies, love/lust, treachery, the role of the incubus, madness, the morally corrupt white Planter, and the Great House, as a haunted space. Psychic fear is explored from different perspectives: as the subliminal horrors and dangers of the Caribbean physical landscape; the history of the island that haunts its people; operating socially and culturally as a belief system, and as real haunting, by those who witness the horrific events in the Great House.
Thompson’s writing, whether Novel, Short stories, Poetry or Plays, continue to address the liminal status of the Caribbean in a post-colonial, post-modernist context. In this Play, she explores the complexities of the colonial legacy; presenting the epistemological effects of colonization that inform her work.
Identifying as a Black British Caribbean Writer, Roselle Thompson uses her art to delve into some of the deep colonial damage on the psyche of the people, their cultural heritages, and their resultant discourse and thinking. Therefore, this play’s themes include the colonial burden on succeeding generations, fragmentation of Caribbean identity, and the role of the Caribbean Writer, in a post-colonial epoch; as being instrumental in either directing or redirecting society.
Reviews:
“Coming after Derek Walcott’s plays, this is a Caribbean masterpiece!” Patricia Kamara, Headteacher.
“A very engaging piece of work. Mark Simpson, teacher.
“A school curriculum must-have.” Lidia Thompson
“This play shows the struggles each generation has with each other, Caribbean history and its consequences.” Caribbean Voices

“Thompson, a Novelist, Poet, Playwright and Broadcaster; explores life through poems which show us how poetry can be a powerful tool for understanding life itself. She convinces us that poetry is alive – pulsing with every breath we take; on issues to do with pain, loss, love, joy, memory, challenges and the enormity of our life experiences.” Messeh Kamara, Commonwealth Africa Initiative
“This book will open minds. The Poetry Anthology will also save students who’re mystified by their diet of esoteric and cryptic poems to study. Through its intimate discussions, observations and thought-provoking issues, the Anthology teaches us to, not just read, but how to enjoy and love poetry.” Words In Motion

POEMS TO NAVIGATE CARIBBEAN DIASPORA DISRUPTIONS

Eagle Publications 2021
Genre: Poetry
ISBN:978-1-8381068-5-0
Format: Paperback
In this 2nd Collection of poems, Roselle Thompson uses her passion for the written word to educate, inspire and uplift others, by providing assertive perspectives on themes of Caribbean migration and its impact in the Diaspora in the UK. Via the many subjects presented in this Collection, Thompson celebrates memory or the act of remembering; as an essential element in migrants’ survival strategies. In elevating the conversation around social justice, equality, education, and hope, Roselle Thompson endorses the migrants’ existence as part of the fabric of British society. Her poems are insightful, sometimes provocative, inspiring, and provide essential perspectives, that offer a way to make sense of Caribbean migrants’ experiences, whilst also serving as catalysts for change. This is also a book about Caribbeanness in Britain, about the ancestral joys, historical pains and present experiences that are sometimes pushed to the limit, which sing the blues in every key, and which Thompson so brilliantly uses to condense, as well as expand emotions.
