Student life at Phoenix

When young learners join our online secondary school, they immediately become part of a warm and thriving community, filled with ways to make friends, work together, and have fun. Each student at Phoenix Community College can join a House.  This is a sub-group or smaller, tight-knit community within our wider school. This structure allows students to gain House points by working together, and engaging in friendly inter-House competition with their fellow House members.

We offer a range of extra-curricular activities, such as cookery, debating, to chess and technology.  This means that students will also find a wide range of clubs, where they can meet classmates who share their interests. There are assemblies, which allow them to create a strong sense of community, via various themes, projects, events and guest talks. We also encourage students to use their own initiative through our co-curriculum activities e.g. a variety of Clubs and societies, Student Council, school newspaper, and bigger events such as our Annual Speech Contests.

Qualified teachers, offering a high-quality British education

At Phoenix Community College, we deliver the full KS3 curriculum online in live, timetabled lessons. This level is at Lower Secondary level, for students aged 14 – 16. The syllabus for our Key Stage 3 curriculum aims to engage students, giving them the chance to discover which subjects they have a passion for, before making their IGCSE choices at the end of Year 9.

For flexibility, young people studying with us at Key Stage 3 (in addition to their core subjects), can enrol onto as many or as few of the additional subjects list.

The Upper Secondary level, for students ages 14 – 16, who are at their GCSE stage, means they can choose from a range of subjects which they then study for two years, before sitting for their GCSEs or IGCSEs.

For both Lower Secondary and Upper Secondary stages, we offer a wide range of subjects, taught by highly qualified teachers.  In an interactive environment and live teachers, students get to collaborate with classmates, and use innovative technologies that boost their learning experience.

Courses created by specialist teachers

Our courses are Accredited British qualifications, which are recognised around the world. The programmes of study we teach at Phoenix Community College have been designed and written by subject specialists with years of teaching experience. Our expert, experienced teachers deliver live, timetabled lessons. Phoenix Community College’s Key Stage 3 courses aim to develop in-depth knowledge, promote independent learning skills and utilise the vast array of educational material stored in the school’s online learning platform.

How we teach the Curriculum

Phoenix Community College uses an online learning platform and lesson library to deliver subjects and provides 24/7 access to national curriculum subject materials.

Our live lessons are timetabled and taught by qualified UK teachers, trained in online teaching and learning. Every week, students will have lessons with the same class groups and teachers, so they have structure and continuity in their learning. All lessons are recorded and accessible at any time, from anywhere. So no matter where in the world you are, with an internet connection, your child can access past lessons, homework materials and useful resources.

Depending on the subject and age of student, subjects may include a seminar lesson and an interactive tutorial lesson (of up to 19 students). Students apply the knowledge they have learned via homework assignments and are assessed regularly through summative and formative assessments.

Our teachers use online break out rooms, chats, polls, quizzes, as well as virtual simulations, to encourage student interaction. This fosters engagement and excitement for the lessons, solidifying the understanding of the topic being discussed.

The classroom

Pupils are taught in timetabled classrooms, Monday to Friday. After greeting pupils, the teachers will give a traditional lesson enhanced with prepared engaging resources. Pupils may then be set worked examples, in class activities, shared tasks, individual pathways and sometimes pupils work in designated pairs or groups. Teachers will constantly monitor pupils’ interaction and respond to general questions or privately to individual queries. The absence of distractions or disruptions enables teachers to devote themselves entirely to teaching and learning.

A sophisticated cloud based learning platform with fully interactive classrooms

During the lesson, pupils communicate with the teacher and each other through a wide variety of medium. Voice, text, whiteboard, notes, recordings, presentations, screen sharing, and co-web browsing are just a few options. Individual pupils can be asked to work through specific examples, share their work or lead the class. By giving every pupil the opportunity to directly and privately message the teacher it means that no question is ever left unspoken or unanswered.

A cloud-based school where learners access all their resources and lesson recordings all day, every day

Each course provides access to the entire subject curriculum; this is available to access at anytime from anywhere. All lessons are digitally recorded and once a lesson has been delivered, pupils can review the lesson recording. Subject materials can help pupils track down exactly what they need. It is a fantastic resource to support pupils to consolidate their learning, master tricky concepts and prepare for examinations.  If for any reason a pupil has missed a lesson (i.e. sickness) they can watch the entire lesson via this digital archive.

Learn more about our online curriculum

Phoenix Community College offers a full British secondary curriculum in a wide range of subjects online. As pupils progress through the school, they can study a  range of GCSE & IGCSE, AS & A Level courses, as well as a range of humanities subjects from our Leadership Academy.

Ideal class sizes & Engaging lessons

Learners are arranged into class tutor groups up to a maximum of 19 pupils. In the secondary school, lessons are taught via ‘Lead’ and ‘Follow’ lessons. Lead lessons resemble masterclasses where much larger groups have the same new subject content delivered to them at the same time by lead teachers in the subject. The follow lessons are the more traditional exercise lessons in much smaller groups where the understanding of the new subject content is explored.

Real-time lessons

All lessons are taught live by our experienced and expert teachers. Within timetabled lessons, we utilise a number of teaching and learning methods.

24 hour learning

The learning platform offers all learners the opportunity to participate in continuous learning activities as well as access to live lesson recordings 24 hours a day.
