SIXTH FORM – KEY STAGE 5

Welcome to Phoenix Community College Online Sixth Form

We are a modern, flexible, and academically rigorous Sixth Form for students aged 16–19. Phoenix Community College offers live online Pre-A level and A-Level Programmes, small class sizes, and structured academic pathways designed to help every student build confidence, achieve strong results and prepare for university, apprenticeships, or employment.

For our international students, English language tuition and support through the IELTS or suitable alternative such as (FCE, CPE) and FSMQ Additional Maths programmes, are included. In addition to the Pre-A level and A level programme, students will be able to participate in Phoenix’s enrichment programmes, which include our cultural visits to British heritage sites (e.g. Parliament) and STEM activity days (e.g. Oxford Space Design). Pre-A level students will also be able to develop their confidence and communication skills with our public speaking and accredited leadership Training Programmes.

Sixth Form Entry Requirements

To manage the demands and challenges of Sixth Form study, students generally need to have a minimum of:

  •  Five GCSEs at Grade 5 or above

  • Passes in English Language and Maths

  •  GCSE Grade 6 or above* in any subject you wish to study at A level

However, it is sometimes possible to study a subject at A level, having achieved less than a Grade 6 at GCSE – individual circumstances are always considered and considered.

Our Pre-A level programme

Generally, to enter universities, having passes in A level subjects are highly regarded – not just here in the UK but also abroad. Therefore, A levels programmes are designed for confident, able students who aspire to study at a university.

At Phoenix we have two programmes of study available:

  1. Our A level programme(2 years) leading to A level certification and
  2. Our Pre-A level programme(1 year) which is designed to build students’ knowledge and skills base in Maths, Science and English.  This enables them to join our A level programme the following year.

For those without the necessary A level entry certification, our Pre-A level Programme will act as a Foundation year followed by 2-year A level study.

Our 1-year Pre-A level programme includes:

  • English

  • Maths

  • Biology

  • Chemistry

  • Physics

This Pre-A level programme acts as a foundation year for the 2-year A Level study and is specifically aimed at non-native English speakers and those who need to build a firm foundation of academic skills to enter studies at A level to help them to survive in their two-year A level programme.

This Foundation programme will provide intensive work on English skills and develop practical science skills that are necessary to thrive in A level study.  In other words, this pre-program should be seen as the first year in a 3-Year A level programme (the main A level programme will be years 2 and 3).  During the Foundation year students will sit relevant accredited examinations in English (PET, FCE, CPE, IELTS) and FSMQ Additional Maths.

In addition to the Pre-A level programme, students will be able to participate in Phoenix’s enrichment programmes, which include our cultural visits to British heritage sites (e.g. Parliament) and STEM activity days (e.g. Oxford Space Design).  Pre-A level students will also be able to develop their confidence and communication skills with our public speaking and accredited leadership Training Programmes.
